Shipping a pallet of standard goods is usually straightforward. Moving a 12-tonne excavator, industrial generator, oversized tank or large piece of manufacturing equipment across countries is a very different challenge.


Oversized cargo can exceed the dimensions or weight limits used for standard containers, trucks and handling equipment. That means the shipment may require specialised trailers, cranes, permits, route planning and sometimes a completely different type of vessel.

For example, a machine may be within the weight capacity of a shipping container but be too tall to fit through the container doors. Another shipment might fit on a flat rack but exceed the legal width allowed on public roads.

Common types of oversized freight include:

  • Excavators and bulldozers

  • Mining machinery

  • Agricultural equipment

  • Boats and marine equipment

  • Industrial generators

  • Transformers

  • Tanks and pressure vessels

  • Construction equipment

  • Structural steel

  • Prefabricated buildings

The exact definition can vary between shipping lines, ports, countries and road authorities, which is why oversized shipments need to be assessed individually.


1. Measure the Cargo Properly

Accurate measurements are one of the most important parts of oversized shipping.

Before requesting freight quotes, record the cargo's:

  • Length

  • Width

  • Height

  • Gross weight

  • Centre of gravity where relevant

  • Lifting points

  • Packing dimensions

Do not rely only on the manufacturer's product specifications.

Attachments, protective frames, packaging and modifications can change the final transport dimensions considerably.

Even a relatively small difference in height or width can affect the trailer required, road route, port handling procedure or shipping method.

For particularly heavy or unusual equipment, technical drawings may also be requested by the freight forwarder, carrier or port.


2. Check Whether the Cargo Can Be Dismantled

Before booking specialised transport, check whether some components can be removed.

An excavator, for example, may have buckets or attachments that can travel separately. Industrial equipment may have platforms, frames or external components that can be dismantled for transport.

Reducing the overall dimensions can sometimes make the shipment significantly easier and cheaper.

In some cases, dismantling may allow cargo that would otherwise require breakbulk transport to move on a flat rack or within another containerised solution.

However, dismantling is not always economical.

The cost of engineers, labour, packing and reassembly needs to be compared with the additional freight cost of transporting the equipment intact.

For genuinely indivisible cargo, specialised transport is usually the better option.


3. Choose the Right Shipping Method

There are several ways oversized cargo can move internationally.


Flat Rack Containers

Flat racks have a container base and end walls but no permanent side walls or roof.

They are commonly used for machinery and equipment that is too wide or tall for a standard shipping container.

Cargo may extend beyond the normal container dimensions, although shipping lines impose their own limits.

Flat racks are often suitable for moderately oversized machinery and industrial equipment.


Open Top Containers

An open top container resembles a standard container but does not have a solid roof.

This allows cargo to be loaded from above using a crane.

They are particularly useful for cargo that fits within the container's width but exceeds its normal height or cannot easily be loaded through the doors.


Breakbulk Shipping

Breakbulk cargo is loaded individually onto the vessel rather than inside a shipping container.

Large industrial machinery, boats, generators, tanks and construction equipment can all travel this way.

Cranes are commonly used to load and unload the cargo.


RoRo Shipping

Roll-on, roll-off shipping is designed for cargo that can be driven or rolled onto a vessel.

Cars are the most obvious example, but RoRo vessels can also transport trucks, agricultural machinery, construction equipment and other wheeled cargo.

Some non-running equipment can also move using specialised trailers or handling equipment.


Project Cargo and Heavy Lift Shipping

Exceptionally large or heavy freight may require dedicated project cargo arrangements.

This is common in sectors such as energy, mining, infrastructure and heavy manufacturing, where individual components can weigh hundreds of tonnes.

In some situations, specialised heavy-lift vessels or charter services may be required.


4. Plan the Entire Journey, Not Just the Ocean Freight

One of the biggest mistakes in oversized shipping is focusing only on the vessel.

The sea journey may actually be the simplest part.

The difficult sections are often getting the cargo from its origin to the export port and then from the destination port to its final location.

Imagine shipping a large industrial tank overseas.

It may travel across the ocean without difficulty, only to arrive at its destination and discover that a bridge, narrow road or tunnel prevents it from reaching the final site.

Oversized transport routes may need to account for:

  • Bridge heights

  • Bridge weight limits

  • Road width

  • Powerlines

  • Railway crossings

  • Roundabouts

  • Roadworks

  • Restricted roads

  • Tunnel clearance

  • Turning radius

  • Local travel restrictions

In some locations, pilot vehicles, police escorts or temporary road closures may also be required.

For very large cargo, route surveys are often completed before transport begins.


5. Organise Permits Early

Oversized road transport frequently requires permits.

The requirements vary considerably between countries and regions.

Depending on the shipment, approvals may be required from road authorities, local governments, police, utility companies, port operators or other transport agencies.

Permit requirements can depend on:

  • Cargo dimensions

  • Total transport weight

  • Axle configuration

  • Route

  • Time of travel

  • Road conditions

  • Escort requirements

Some large movements may only be permitted during certain hours.

Others may require powerlines, traffic lights or road signs to be temporarily moved.

6. Plan Loading and Unloading

You also need to work out how the cargo will physically move between each stage of transport.

Depending on the shipment, this may involve:

  • Mobile cranes

  • Forklifts

  • Reach stackers

  • Heavy-lift cranes

  • Low-loader trailers

  • Hydraulic modular trailers

  • Special lifting frames

Check that suitable equipment is available at both the origin and destination.

The final delivery site deserves particular attention.

A major international port may have excellent heavy-lifting equipment, while a remote construction site or factory may have limited access.

For complex cargo, a site inspection may be worthwhile before the shipment begins.


7. Make Sure the Cargo Is Properly Secured

Oversized freight must be restrained for the forces it will experience during transport.

That includes not only movement at sea, but also road transport, lifting, loading and unloading.

Depending on the cargo, securing methods may include:

  • Chains

  • Wire rope

  • Timber bracing

  • Steel frames

  • Welding

  • Heavy-duty lashing

  • Custom cradles

The correct method depends on the weight, dimensions, shape and centre of gravity of the cargo.

Poorly secured freight can create serious safety risks and may also lead to cargo damage, delays and additional costs.


8. Prepare Customs Documentation

Oversized cargo still needs to pass through the normal customs process.

Typical documentation may include:

  • Commercial invoice

  • Packing list

  • Bill of lading

  • Certificate of origin

  • Import permits where required

  • Insurance documents

  • Equipment serial numbers

  • Technical specifications

Additional documentation may be required depending on the cargo and destination country.

Used machinery may need extra attention because some countries apply strict quarantine, biosecurity or cleaning requirements.

Equipment containing fuel, batteries, chemicals or other regulated materials may also require additional declarations.


9. Consider Cargo Insurance

The more specialised the cargo, the more expensive a problem can become.

A large piece of manufacturing equipment may be worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.

Damage during lifting or transport could also delay an entire factory installation, mining project or construction schedule.

Marine cargo insurance should therefore be considered separately from basic carrier liability.

Make sure the declared value accurately reflects the cargo and understand which stages of the journey are covered.

Ideally, insurance should cover the shipment from the original pickup point through to final delivery.


10. Work With an Experienced Freight Forwarder

Oversized freight usually involves several companies working together.

A single shipment may involve:

  • Local trucking companies

  • Port terminals

  • Shipping lines

  • Customs brokers

  • Crane operators

  • Heavy haulage contractors

  • Permit authorities

  • Overseas agents

The freight forwarder's job is to coordinate these different moving parts.

This becomes increasingly important as cargo gets larger.

Saving a small amount on the ocean freight rate does not help much if the cargo then spends a week sitting at the destination port because the correct trailer, crane or road permits were not organised.


How Much Does It Cost to Ship Oversized Cargo?

There is no useful flat rate for oversized shipping.

Pricing depends on variables including:

  • Origin and destination

  • Cargo dimensions

  • Cargo weight

  • Shipping method

  • Equipment required

  • Port handling

  • Crane hire

  • Customs clearance

  • Final delivery

This is why oversized freight quotes usually require much more information than standard pallet or container shipments.
